Last year, Armstrong used the long, hot Tour Down Under as the “proving ground” for a credible Tour de France bit, and this year he’s done the same thing. Armstrong, joined by his Radioshack team, didn’t expect to win this year’s Tour Down Under, but generated excitement about his “comeback” when he placed 20th overall, just 49 seconds behind Allan Davis.
When asked about his performance, Armstrong said that it “has given [him] the reassurance that [he] can still race at the highest level.” Which is great news for fans of Armstrong…or at least fans of the excitement he generates.
Although the event suits sprinters like winner Greipel (Germany) and Davis (Australia), Armstrong’s plans to test his mettle against some of the best have paid off…so far.
